The world of golf is entering a new era with the launch of TGL, presented by SoFi. This unique golf league, combining advanced technology with the traditional game of golf, will bring together top players from the PGA TOUR for two-hour competitions each week in prime time, starting in January 2025. If you’re a golf enthusiast or just curious about the future of sports experiences, this is the guide for you.
What is TGL?
TGL is an innovative golf league that takes the game to new heights by blending digital and physical elements. Six teams, each representing a city, will face off in a season-long competition. Matches will be played at the SoFi Center, a purpose-built arena at Palm Beach State College in Florida. All the action will be broadcast live on ESPN and ESPN+, with players micro-equipped to give viewers an unprecedented look at the game.
A Look Inside the Arena
SoFi Center is a groundbreaking venue, designed to capture the full spectrum of the golf experience in a new and exciting way. The playing area is the size of a football field, approximately 97 x 50 meters, and is divided into two main zones:
ScreenZone: Here, players hit their long shots against a huge simulator (64 x 53 feet) powered by Full Swing technology. Players stand on surfaces that mimic real fairways, rough and sand bunkers.
GreenZone: A 22,475 square meter short game zone where shots under 50 yards are played. This zone includes a 41 meter wide rotating green that can change shape and slope thanks to nearly 600 actuators. This creates a varied and dynamic playing experience.
How Does the Game Work?
Players play holes that combine virtual and physical elements. Each hole is designed by three of the world's leading golf course architecture firms and begins in the simulator before finishing in the GreenZone. There are 30 unique holes in total, 15 of which are selected for each match and arranged in a specific order to create a challenging course.
Step-by-Step: From Screen to Green
ScreenZone Shots: Players begin the hole by hitting out towards the simulator. This can include tee shots or fairway shots.
Transition to GreenZone: For shots within 50 yards, players move to the GreenZone where they hit their short shots and putt on the transformable green.
Complete the Hole: Players finish by putting the ball in the hole, just like on a regular golf course.
Why TGL?
TGL is more than just golf – it's an experience. By combining sports, technology and entertainment, TGL offers:
High-intensity matches: Each match lasts just two hours, making it faster and more action-packed than traditional rounds of golf.
Unique audience experience: With players microchipped and every shot broadcast live, viewers get a closer connection to the game and its stars.
Innovative design: The combination of virtual and physical elements creates a visual and tactical spectacle never before seen in golf.
How Can You Follow TGL?
The games will air weekly on ESPN and ESPN+, premiering in January 2025. If you're in Florida, you can also visit the SoFi Center and experience the games live.
